0 0 0 THE KNOXVILLE JOURNAL Thursday, May 4, 1961 16 Horses May Enter Saturday's Derby Smallwood Stops Reds On 5-Hitter By ED HARRIS Journal Sports Editor Knoxville got another good pitching performance last nightthis fi time from Dick Smallwood -and backed it up with a 14-hit attack to edfeat Columbia's defending Sally champions, 10 to 3. Smallwood was making! his first Knoxville appearance. He impressed with a nifty five-hitter, struck out eight and walked four. The victory closed out a home stand for the Smokies. They broke even with the Reds and won two out of three from Jacksonville.

Knoxville will be in Jacksonville tonight to open a' four-game series with Al Phelon the likely starter. They will go to Charleston for three games before returning home a week from tonight against Greenville. Ray Oyler, shortstop who was put back in the lineup after a few days of rest, came through with three hits to bat across a trio of mates to lead the assault last night on a pair of Red hurlers. Chuck P.

Parke, an ex-Idaho boy who trains Crozier for Fred W. Hooper, said the winner of old classic might shatter Whirlaway's Derby and track mark set in 1941, Whirlaway skipped the mile and one quarter in 2 minutes, one and two-fifths seconds. It is the only record still on the books at the track. Crozier whipped four-and-twenty, one of the two Alberta Ranches' Derby horses, in the Derby Trial yesterday. The winner stepped the mile on the lightning fast Downs' strip in besting the 1:35 record set by Hasty Road in winning the 1954 Trial Stakes.

Parke based his record prediction on hopes for a continued fast track--no rain. As the Derby fans poured into old Louisville, interest was fanned by Crozier's speed display. Most hardboots thought the performance set up the Derby for Mrs. Jack Price's -Carry Back. Carry Back, winner of the Flamingo and Florida Derby, is a come-from-behind runner who bypassed the Derby Trial.

Leonard P. Sasso's Globemaster, another speed demon, upset Carry Back in the Wood Memorial April 22 at Jamaica, Lack of a swift pace was blamed for Carry Back's defeat, since Globemaster opened up six lengths and then took a breather or two, and had enough left to hold off Carry Back's stretch bid. Carry Back is quoted as the 8-5 favorite. Four-and-Twenty lost support after he set the WINNING COMBINATION- -Crozier, who won the Derby Trial in a recordbreaking 1:34.3 for the mile Tuesday posed yesterday with his trainer Chuck Parke at Churchill Downs. Smallwood's performance came a night after Willie Smith tossed: a four in a losing cause Tuesday night. The Smokies bunched four hits with a pair of walks and an error in the fourth to take the lead, 5-1. In the seventh they added three more on four hits and an error and two in the eighth on three safeties and another error. Dick Beall was the most trouble for Smallwood. The Columbia first sacker had a run-producing single and a two-run homer to account for all the visitors' runs.
