comments roll off your skin. You also will learn to give a death stare to people. Most people will look away quickly once they realize you overheard their nastiness and don’t care. Besides, you can always hope karma gets them later. So back to our meeting. I felt so bad for one young mom. She has a son with autism and took him to aChristmasactivity. It was crowded and overwhelming. This poor mom heard the comments about her sweet, little boy. Instead of helping her or encouraging her for being brave enough to try, people weren’t kind. She took her son and went home ready to cry. Her comment was she thought she would just stay home from now on. Been there, felt that so often. I’ve cried leaving places. I’ve cried once I got us all safely home and could hide from the kids. I’ve ranted to myself. It took years, but I have that tough skin. It’s rare now someone’s comments get to me. It does

ments — the stares — the outright rudeness of some people when our children with autism might act “different” than others while out in public or even atfamily and friend functions. How do you handle the questions, the comments? How do you not feel like crying when someone is mean to your child? It really is one of the hardest parts of autism to handle. Just being a parent makes you want to protect your children from mean people. Add in the autism — cause, you know, someone different either brings out the best or the worst in people — and it can be so tough. And unfortunately, it seems the mean people always find you on days where you are already stressed and near tears. Theholiday seasonjust adds more stress and more opportunities for those “helpful” people to make you want to cry and never leave home again. Don’t let them do that to you. Your family has just as much right to be at every activity as everyone else. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, you will get mad. Yes, you will cry. And yes, you will eventually develop a thick skin and will learn to let those

still happen, though. Not as bad as it used to, and usually, if a comment hurts me, it comes from someone I never expect to make such a comment. It takes longer to develop that thick skin around family and friends, but your first priority is always your child. Some families take a little longer to learn how amazing your child is. Another mom and I shared that we knew how these young moms felt. We understand how hard it is to let the world see your child and not know if the world will love and accept him/ her or will be cruel. We also know it’s important for your child to be able to explore the world. You will never know what your child might like if you don’t try. It may take several tries before you know for sure. It might mean you try and then wait a long time to try again. Only you will know, but don’t let the rude people of the world scare you into staying home. I’ve lost my temper with a few people who made comments about Casey and Rob. I’ve — not my finest moment — yelled at people in stores. I’ve stopped moms and embarrassed them by telling them how

their children treated mine. I’ve developed a death glare for those I catch staring. I’ve ignored some people. I’ve replied to some comments by saying, “Thank you for showing me there are worse things in the world than autism. My child could be rude and mean like you.” Remember, I’ve been doing this for more than 30 years. It takes a long time to learn to ignore what other people say and think. You will get there, though. Keep trying new things. Meet new people. Learn to glare. Learn to stand up to bullies. Remember no one’s opinion really matters. You can do this. I’m sure of it. If all else fails, ask a veteran autism parent to go places with you. You can learn from the best. Get a good dose of vitamin G this holiday season

Happy Thanksgiving. Are you feeling thankful today? There is a probability stressors in your life could be squelching the true purpose of this day. In a recent survey of almost 800 American adults, 62% reported the holidays increase their stress level. Respondents said the things that most stressed them out about holidays are lack of money, lack of time, hype and commercialism. Well, I certainly can’t create more money or time for you, but I can encourage you to give some intentional thought to why we choose to do the things we do this time of year. It may end up saving you both money and time over the next few weeks. But I mostly hope it increases your attitude of gratitude. Tiffany Musick of Point Loma Nazarene University said living a life of gratitude is a spiritual discipline that requires time, effort and faithful practice. Research suggests gratitude takes a conscious effort. It is not just something we either feel or don’t feel depending on circ*mstances.

Emily Marrison Columnist

The OSU Extension Mindful Wellness Team has been promoting a focus on vitamin G (gratitude) during the month of November. Gratitude is a skill that can be developed and strengthened with mindfulness. Research also has shown practicing gratitude can positively impact your physical health including lower blood pressure. How can you practice being grateful? One way to encourage this discipline is to keep a gratitude journal you write in at least weekly. You also could take that writing another step by sending a

thank-you note. Think about the difference it could make in your life and the relationships you could strengthen if you wrote just one thankyou note each month. And then imagine if you would commit to writing to just one person a week. Another suggestion is observation. Be on the lookout for people you can thank. It could be an act of service you receive from them, like holding a door open for you or doing a chore around the house. In our parenting classes, we talk about praising our children for both being and doing. We praise them for their accomplishments because we want them to succeed and see the connection between hard work and achievement. But we also should praise them because they are ours and

we love being able to parent them. We remind them our love for them is unconditional, not dependent on their good performance. Modeling gratitude for our families, especially our children, helps encourage them in the practice as well. Try grabbing a pumpkin — real or fake. Use markers to write on it what your family and friends are grateful for this year — both tangible and intangible things. Put your gratitude pumpkin on display and use it to remember all you have to be thankful for during Thanksgiving and the whole Advent season. Researchers Giacomo B o n o a n d J e ff r e y F r o h found grateful, young adolescents age 11-13 are more satisfied with their school, family, community, friends

Similarly, grateful teens age 14-19 are more satisfied with their lives, use their strengths to better their community, are more engaged in their schoolwork and hobbies, and are less envious, depressed and materialistic. Funds raised for a new rescue boat in Warsaw

Submitted

The Walhonding Valley Fire District’s board purchased an Inmar Inflatable Rescue Boat for Walhonding Valley firefighters to use. The purchase was made possible through support from the Coshocton Foundation, Coshocton Elks (Marilyn Griffis), Redd Public Safety Equipment and Walhonding Valley firefighters who worked on helping raise funds. The Inmar is a versatile craft and is lighter than the station’s current Rescue One Connector Boat. The Inmar will work along with the current boat and will be able to be used in areas where the larger rescue boat is not able to access.

Consider these Thanksgiving facts Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends and reflect on one’s blessings. In anticipation of this holidays, here are some interesting facts about the Thanksgiving celebration. 1. American Thanksgiving is largely modeled on a 17th century harvest feast shared by the English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe. 2. Canadians celebrate

Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. It is based on European harvest festivals. 3. The National Turkey Federation says around 45 million turkeys will be eaten on Thanksgiving, which equates to about 720 million pounds of turkey being consumed (with the average turkey size being 16 pounds). 4. The Butterball hotline answers roughly 100,000 calls every year on its turkey question hotline. 5. In 1953, the Swanson company overestimated the number of frozen turkeys it would sell for the holiday season by 26 tons. Rather than waste the meat, Swanson sliced it up, repackaged it and created the first frozen TV dinners. 6. Thanksgiving in America may be older than many recognize. While Thanksgiving is largely tied to the 17th century settlers, the National Parks Service says in 1565 Spanish settlers in St. Augustine (now Florida) celebrated by having a meal to which they invited

the native Seloy tribe. The Spanish served pork stew, sea biscuits, red wine, and garbanzo beans. Some say the Seloy contributed turkey, venison and maize. 7. Thanksgiving didn’t become a civic holiday until Abraham Lincoln made it one after the Civil War tragedy. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday on October 20, 1864. 8. The Pilgrims did not refer to themselves as “pilgrims.” They used the word “separatists” as they were separating themselves from a larger belief system. 9. In addition to Canada and the United States, Grenada, Liberia, the Philippines, Saint Lucia, and the Netherlands celebrate their own versions of Thanksgiving. 10. Each year, the Ameri-

can president “pardons” a turkey from slaughter on Thanksgiving. This tradition dates back to when Abraham Lincoln’s son was upset that his family’s turkey that was going to be killed for Thanksgiving dinner. 11. According to the U.S. Calorie Control Council (CCC), an average American may consume 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day. 12. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual tradition. People line the parade route in New York City or tune in to watch the parade on television. It originated in 1924 and the famed balloons were added in 1927. 13. Apple pie is the pie of choice for Thanksgiving, even though pumpkin pie is prevalent this time of year.

was something Coshocton County had to help veterans do.” The f irst f light with a group of Coshocton County veterans took place in 2012. “The first flights we took, you had to pay for things like the hotel the night before and meals yourself, and then we started getting support from groups like the Blue Star Mothers,” Dilly said. “They have been very instrumental in helping us with Honor Flights throughout the years.” The flights leave early from Columbus, and then veterans are taken around Washington, D.C. by bus to see the various memorials. Each is assigned a guardian, who looks out for them throughout the day. When the veterans return to Columbus, they are treated to a warm welcome from a variety of people at the airport in Columbus. “Honor Flight tries to take care of everything and make the trip as safe as possible for the veterans,” Dilly said. “It’s really evolved, and it’s been a great journey with them.” The program started out to serve World War II veterans but is now open

Eight flights are planned for 2023, and they are hoping to find more World War II veterans to participate. “We’ve started a letter campaign to try and reach them,” Johnson said. “We’ve been told Ohio still has 2,000 World War II veterans, and we need to know where they are to see if they want to take a flight.” Sharon Burns, president of the local Blue Star Mothers group, thanked all of the veterans for attending and for their service. “We love to be able to take part in the Honor Flight,” she said. “You all deserve to go.” For more information on Honor Flight Columbus, visit w w w.honorf lightcmh.org.
