“Are you one of the med school tour guides today?” I looked up from the bathroom sink and chuckled, “You think I look the part already? In due time. It's gonna be some day ahead for us.” Jittery from a new energy drink, I merely asked some girls if this was their first rodeo too and made their acquaintances. Last month, I attended the annual pre-health conference at McGovern Medical School and participated in the airway clinic, recruitment fair, and campus tour. From role call, there were a handful of other UTD Comets, UTSA Roadrunners, SFA Lumberjacks … even some from Louisiana next door. 🚀Why go to conferences as a prospective? 1. Meet on-site admissions reps and future YOU…. whether you're exploring programs or have specific questions, everyone's there to enlighten you and enthusiastically lure you into the applicant pool. Tabling is an excellent way to learn more and with the inaugural CAA program underway soon, it is useful to get interview advice and hear what's in store in the future.2. Hands-on career workshops: the Airway clinic was a solid extension to my shadowing and the Anesthesia 101 segment was digestible. Also learned Seldinger method for A-lines. The clip below is me squealing before struggling to intubate a baby mannequin. 3. Develop your social and hospitality skills: Exchanging life stories and ideas is a simple way to gain perspectives and pique curiosity.⚓️Prep Tips: 1. Hydrate well and save trying new energy drinks for another setting.2. Print out conversation starters for mingling as well as writing your own questions for reps. 3. Set a few goals to achieve during it all: meet 20 new attendees or find 3 med student vloggers, TikTokers etc. 🍪I'd also like to take a moment to plug AspiringCAA’s personal statement workshop next Monday night hosted by Sarah Whitfield (subscribe to the helpful newsletter on aspiringCAA.com!!) Stay curious and authentic

🌟 Spotlight on Dr. Benedicta Hayford🌟Throughout the #LinkedInwithOd 15-Day Challenge, I've connected with exceptional individuals. Today, I'm honored to highlight Dr. Hayford 🚀, a remarkable figure who has truly stood out in my journey.Dr. Hayford's insights have been a guiding light, especially for me as a first-year medical student. Her post, "#Ɛbɛfa🥲 to #Afapapa🤭," beautifully encapsulates the challenging yet rewarding path through medical school. Her emphasis on self-compassion and steering clear of comparison in our achievements resonates deeply within the medical community. Her diverse experiences, ranging from internships at Komofo Anokye Teaching Hospital to serving as a research assistant during a collaborative research with the University of Utah Division of Public Health and KNUST highlight the immense value of hands-on experiences in healthcare—a perspective that has reshaped my understanding entirely. Moreover, Dr. Hayford's participation in the Model UN conference, an unconventional but enriching endeavor for a healthcare professional, has inspired me to explore opportunities beyond the traditional confines of my field. As she eloquently put it, "Sharing our achievements serves as inspiration for others." Dr. Hayford's journey has certainly motivated me, and I aspire to craft my own story of growth and accomplishment, echoing the lessons learned and progress made, five years down the line. The road ahead is long, but her narrative has ignited the spark within me to aim higher and embrace every opportunity for growth. “#Ɛbɛfa🥲 to “#Afapapa🤭” 🌟 #Inspiration #MedicalJourney #LearningAndGrowth 🚀#personalityHighlight #JourneyOfGrowth #LinkedInwithOd #SafetyIsEveryonesBusiness #15DayChallenge

Have you ever considered a career in public health but aren’t sure if your skills or education would translate? The Pathways to Public Health Fellowship has helped hundreds of Californians from varying sectors and education backgrounds change careers and enter public service through 13-month placements with local Public Health Departments. Here’s one of their stories. Vardan Shamamyan started his career as a tech and later as a compliance officer at a small retail pharmacy. There, he saw firsthand, many of the inequities and shortcomings of the healthcare system. These experiences and the COVID-19 pandemic led Vardan to conclude that the only way to impact change was at the public health level. Encouraged by his wife, who has a master’s degree in public health, he applied for and accepted a California Pathways Into Public Health (Pathways) Fellowship."I truly feel like our work is going to make a difference in our community. The Pathways program is probably the best gateway you can walk through to a career in public health—and this is coming from someone who did not even have an undergraduate degree when I started. Get those applications in!"Vardan is currently working on a project to increase equitable access to hospital financial assistance programs. Data revealed that one in 10 adults in the Los Angeles area incurred medical debt, which can impact housing stability, food access, and more. Vardan and his team are designing a policy, application, and plain language summary that all hospitals in the area can use. A standardized process should make things easier for billing departments and patients seeking full or partial hospital debt forgiveness."My LA County Public Health Office colleagues are passionate about positive change. There is no substitute for seeing firsthand how much work goes into every report and every program. I am so impressed by everyone I work with," said Vardan. Are you ready to make a difference in your community like Vardan? Join the public health field today. The deadline for the next Pathways Fellows program is April 5. Learn more about the fellowships and student internships available here: go.cdph.ca.gov/pathways. #PublicHealth #PublicHealthCareers #StateofCalifornia #HealthyCA4All #StateJobs #PublicHealthMatters

Too many PhDs like Hoda accept low paying positions because they don’t know their value, or don’t know how to communicate their value to employers. If you have a PhD, you are valuable. Your degree is valuable. You did not make a mistake. The only problem is academia doesn’t teach us how to get hired outside of academia, even though that’s where many PhDs end up. Academia and academic publishers need you as cheap labor to survive. This is why they push the “publish or perish” culture. The skills you’ve gained are in demand in industry. You’re needed and wanted, just like Hoda found out when she changed her strategy and got into her dream industry career. With the right network and strategy, you can get hired into industry too. We’re rooting for you. Make 2024 the year you break free into a great industry career.#jobsearch #careerdevelopment #careers #resumes #negotiating #gethired #jobtips #phd #phds #postdoc #postdocs #phdlife #phdchat #phdjobs #phdcareers #phdstudents #phdstudent #cheekyscientist
