Why you are going to love our Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Recipe

Even down here in balmy Miami...I enjoy a good soup or stew when the temperatures drop!

Sometimes I enjoy a bowl of soup JUST BECAUSE, but especially when I am feeling under the weather.

There's just something about a warm bowl of hearty goodness that relaxes me and makes me all cozy in my bed while I binge watch Netflix or Hulu!

Soups, stews and chilis are the BEST comfort foods when you're feeling sick and sluggish.

I recently had a bad cold, which resulted in a sore throat, and ALL I ate was soft pastas and soups!

This Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Recipe is perfect for all of the above!

Slow Cooker Soup Recipes are the Best!

Bonus...it's cooked in a slow cooker, so all you have to do is dump the ingredients and forget it! This is especially helpful when you are not feeling your best, as you can throw all of the ingredients in the slow cooker in the morning.

Then when you get up to shower and take your meds, then it is all ready for you when you get hungry later!

I absolutely love slow cookers and use mine for a TON of different recipes. I began using one back when I was married and working full time, as it was such a struggle to have a homemade meal on the table every day after working all day.

I started out with a small, regular sized one, and then eventually, I upgraded to a large one that I still use to this day!

We made this in the Quick Cooker (slow cooker option, four hours) and it came out perfect. Everything cooked as it should, we were not disappointed. Split pea has been my favorite since I was a kid and your recipe was spot on! This is a definitely a keeper. Thank you for sharing it.

This sounds wonderful, I was wondering if anyone has put potatoes in this recipe…did they cook to mush father 8 hours?

  16. Jenn

If you are going to add potatoes, make sure they are a russet, those tend to hold up the best in slow cooker recipes!

This turned out great! I read others that said theirs were crunchy… after you put it all in pot you have to stir before starting to cook. The peas were all stuck together and that would cause them not to cook well.
Thank you for this recipe! We love it!

I read somewhere that the peas have to be fresh, and maybe if the reader had them for a long time, that would cause that. The other thought was that the peas might not have been immersed in the broth. Just suggestions. Mine was perfect at four hours on high.

  19. Lauren

There seems to be mixed reviews on this. I found it needs to be cooked much longer than the 8 hours on low. I’m not sure if you were supposed to soak the peas prior but mine aren’t getting mushy either and I’ve done 4 hrs on low(wasn’t getting soft) and 4 hours on high (soft but not mushy) not sure where the issue lies.

  20. Jenn

I have had a few people say the same thing - did you stir them up so that they were not all stuck together? I am trying to figure out how people are getting different results.

I read that if the split peas are old (even when you buy them) they don't soften, irrespective of the duration of time they are cooked.

  22. Lynne

I always soak the peas over night. Soup turns out great

Made this today for the first time. I'm glad I read thru the comments the day before. I soaked my peas for 3 hrs before putting them in the crock. After 4 hrs on low it wasn't looking like the peas were cooking at all (yes I stirred them well) so I turned it up to high for almost 5 hrs. They did cook and there was a lot of liquid. I used my immersion blender and it thickened up nicely. It's good soup and was super easy to make!

  26. Karleigh

    Any leftovers,can be frozen?

  27. Jennifer

They can definitely be frozen, but I think the soup would be a lot mushier once it's reheated.

I made this tonight and my husband and I loved it! I blended it at the end to make it smooth.

FAQs

Why are my split peas not getting soft in slow cooker? ›

If your split peas are hard after this length of cooking time, there is something wrong with the peas or with your water. If the peas are very old and dried out, they won't soften. And if the water you use for making the soup is hard with lots of dissolved minerals that can stop the peas from softening.

What is the ratio of split peas to liquid? ›

Bring about 1.5 cups of water or broth to a boil for every cup of lentils or split peas.

Do split peas need to be soaked before cooking? ›

No. Split peas, like lentils, do not need to be soaked before cooking. Beans require soaking prior to cooking, but because these are peas they can be used directly in the recipe. It is still a good idea to rinse your peas thoroughly before cooking to remove any dirt particles.

Should split pea soup be thick or thin? ›

Split pea soup naturally thickens as the peas break down during cooking and also as it sits, especially if refrigerated. If it's too thick for your liking, you can easily thin it by adding a bit of chicken or vegetable broth, or even water, until you reach your desired consistency.

How do you keep split pea soup from getting thick? ›

The starches and the gelatin will form a mesh when cooling, so the consistency of the pea-soup will always be thick when cold. On heating, do what Mien advised: add some water or broth to the soup to the consistency that you want.

How do you add flavor to a bland split pea soup? ›

Using onions, garlic, and fresh spices like thyme will add flavor to the soup. The real trick to making a bland pea soup extra tasty is using a bone or ham hock in the soup during the cooking process. Chicken broth will also add flavor to the soup.

What is the difference between split pea soup and pea soup? ›

Pea Variety: The main difference lies in the type of peas used. Split pea soup is typically made from dried split peas, while green pea soup is made from fresh or frozen green peas. Texture: Split pea soup has a thicker and heartier texture compared to green pea soup.

How do you know when split peas are done? ›

Split peas absorb lots of water as they cook, so check the soup often and add liquid as needed. The peas only need to be cooked until they are tender. But if you like a smoother, creamier texture, cook them longer until they soften and fall apart.

Can you overcook split peas? ›

Split peas and lentils tend to get overcooked. Once I figured out that they don't need to reach the State of Horrifyingly Mushy, my legume cookery horizons expanded dramatically. Actually, I find it pretty amazing that more people don't cook with dried peas and lentils.

How do you reduce gas in split pea soup? ›

How do you make pea soup not gassy? Using Ayurvedic cooking methods, rinsing and soaking your peas before cooking, and eating them in a balanced meal help make pea soup not gassy.

Why are the peas hard in my split pea soup? ›

Either your peas are old enough that they are so dried out that they won't soften, or the water you are using to make your soup is hard, containing lots of dissolved minerals that prevent the peas from softening. If this happens to you, you may end up having a pot of crunchy soup.

What goes good with split pea soup? ›

What do you serve with split pea soup? This soup is perfect paired with a grilled cheese sandwich (or just a hunk of crusty bread!) for dunking. For something lighter, serve it with fresh kale citrus salad. Or, if you want to keep things simple, just sprinkle a few crispy homemade croutons on top.

Why is my split pea soup not mushy? ›

Why Are My Split Peas Not Softening? In this soup, the peas should be soft after about 1 to 1 1/2 hours cooking time. If you take a taste after this time and they haven't softened, your peas are likely stale. Buy a fresh batch before making the soup again.

Why is my split pea soup not creamy? ›

One common reason is using too much water or broth while cooking. Additionally, if the split peas are not cooked long enough, they may not release enough starch to thicken the soup. Another possibility is not adding enough vegetables or other thickening ingredients during the cooking process.

Why do split peas stay hard after cooking? ›

If your split peas don't get soft, it's more likely they are old or were stored in a container that wasn't airtight. Even though they keep for quite a while, dried beans don't keep forever.

Why are my peas hard after cooking? ›

Overcooking them. One of the major mistakes everyone seems to make with peas is that they often get overcooked. This is what turns them from vibrant deep green to that putrid yellowy green. In addition, overcooked peas, depending on the cooking method, can be extremely dry, tough, and starchy, or mushy and soupy.

How long to cook split peas to soften? ›

Split peas cook relatively quickly. Unsoaked peas take from 1 to 2 hours of simmering; soaked peas take about 40 minutes. Also, the only difference between yellow and green split peas is color. Split peas absorb lots of water as they cook, so check the soup often and add liquid as needed.
